This eight week course will focus on the visual representation of the Rising, events preceding it, its immediate aftermath and subsequent key commemorations.
The range of visual representation to be explored will include badges, cartoons, crafts, emblems, film, flags, graffiti, illustration, medals, photography, postage stamps and television.
The politics and power of visual representation will be considered as will methods of visual analysis.

The structure of the course will include weekly illustrated talks, group discussion, a guest lecture and a guided tour of an exhibition/venue related to the Rising.

Guest Lecture: 'The 1916 Rising and Film'  March 3rd.
Dr. Kevin Rockett, Fellow Emeritus, Trinity College Dublin, was, until recently, a Professor in Film Studies at the university. He is author or co-author of nine books on the history of Irish cinema and the cinemas of the Irish diaspora, including the ground-breaking Cinema and Ireland (1987) and, with his wife Emer, the three volume series on picture-going in Ireland: Irish Film Censorship: A Cultural Journey from Silent Cinema to Internet Pornography (2004), Magic Lantern, Panorama and Moving Picture Shows in Ireland, 1786–1909 (2011) and Film Exhibition and Distribution in Ireland, 1909–2010 (2011). He is also Director of Trinity College’s online resource Irish Film & TV Research Online (

Des McGuinness has already presented two art history courses in Draíocht and prior to that he was a lecturer in the School of Communications, Dublin City University.

Pobal Gaeilge Cúig Déag will be hosting a night to commemorate 1916. The integral role the Irish Language played in the events of the 1916 Rising will be presented by a panel of expert speakers and historians. There will be music on the night from Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. This event will be presented in Irish with simultaneous translation provided in English on the night.

Beidh Pobal Gaeilge Cúig Déag ag óstáil oíche le 1916 a chomhóradh. Beidh an ról lárnach a bhí ag an Ghaeilge le linn Éirí Amach 1916 curtha i láthair ag saineolaithe teanga agus staire. Beidh ceol ar an oíche ón Chraobh Áitiúil de Chomhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. Beidh an imeacht seo curtha i láthair i nGaeilge le haistriúchán comhuaineach ar fáil i mBéarla ar an oíche.

Oil Painting Classes

6 WEEKS / 19 APRIL – 24 MAY 2016

These classes will introduce participants to the medium of oil painting and will be a mix of theoretical and practical sessions. Some previous art experience would be beneficial but previous oil painting experience is not essential. We will study the historical context of the medium as well as different examples from various genres and periods. We will look at different approaches and techniques to oil painting and participants can expect to produce several oil paintings during the course.
Dave is a full-time artist and art facilitator working in oil and pastel. He has had numerous solo exhibitions and has exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Ulster Academy in addition to the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Oil Painters.

Join artist Jason Deans for a private tour of his exhibition Any Observer followed by a print workshop in response to the subjects discussed in the show. Jason has over 10 years experience as a printmaker, working predominantly through drypoint etching, woodblock and silkscreen. During the afternoon workshop you will discover, with professional yet informal guidance from the artist, how to use drypoint etching techniques including the printing process from idea to completion and will leave with your very own finished print!
