MAKing Art: The DRAWing Exhibition

MAKing Art: The DRAWing Exhibition

Wed 25 Apr - Sat 16 Jun 2018 Ground & First Floor Galleries

Heartscapes: Drawings by Sharon Kelly
Ground Floor Gallery
Works from the The National Collection of Contemporary Drawing (NCCD), Limerick City Gallery of Art
First Floor Gallery

MAKing Art is the first of a series of exhibitions (2018-2022) aimed at children, young people and the child in us all, which explores a particular visual art discipline, its materials, processes and varied manifestations. Drawing is the focus of the first exhibition in this series. It reveals aspects of drawing as primary means of human expression. It consists of two complementary elements: works by Sharon Kelly, a distinguished Belfast-based artist, who uses drawing as the main form of her practice; and a selection of images from the National Collection of Contemporary Drawing (NCCD), presented in collaboration with Limerick City Gallery of Art. In addition, Draíocht will commission a new drawing from Sharon Kelly informed by her engagement with the people of Dublin 15 through her artist’s residency and open studio. A specially designed programme of engagement will include family workshops, a school-based drawing residency and bespoke tours and talks. All of these elements are designed to offer a rich experience of various aspects of drawing.

Sharon Kelly is a visual artist whose practice centres on drawing and includes moving image, print and sound. The work explores themes relating to the human condition – contemplations on life, loss, healing, memory. Sharon’s work is held in public and private collections in Ireland, Britain, USA and The Netherlands. Alongside her studio-based practice, she has undertaken many residencies, site-specific projects in hospitals, collaborative projects with poets, dancers and choreographers and exploratory multimedia project in the field of education most notably with Kid’s Own Initiative, Virtually There. Sharon is a graduate of University of Ulster holding a BA and an MFA in Fine Art. She was co-founder of Paragon Studios/PS2 where she was co-director from 1993-2016 and where she continues to have her studio. Sharon is a full member of Royal Ulster Academy of Art.

The National Collection of Contemporary Drawing (NCCD) was officially founded by the Limerick Contemporary Art group, comprised of artists and business people of Limerick in 1987 with the aim of giving the city a distinctive collection of contemporary artwork. The NCCD collection is part of the permanent collection of Limerick City Gallery of Art and comprises of over 200 artworks, which embrace all forms of contemporary drawing practice reflecting in its constantly changing nature as it adapts to new technologies and artistic ideas.
The Artists included in this exhibition at Draíocht include: Dorothy Cross, Liadin Cooke, Brian Bourke, Piet Moog, Alan Keane, Brian Maguire, John Aiken, Felim Egan, Niamh O’Malley, Elizabeth McGill, Nigel Rolfe, Arno Kramer, Tjibbe Hooghemstra, Susan Dunne, Aileen McKeogh, Nick Miller, Siobhan Piercy, Chris Boland and Kyd & Kyde Konenyykb.
