D15 Youth Theatre
January - May 2012
D15 Youth Theatre will shortly be entering into its second term of its first year. Working with Eimear Morrissey, Mark Rogers and Ann Ryan, this talented group of 13-18 year olds meet in Draíocht every Tuesday evening and work on many elements of theatre from improvisation to Stanislavski technique to dance. From March the group will begin to work towards a piece of theatre that will explore what they have learned over the course of the term. If you would like to find out more about Youth Theatre, what it is and how to get involved next year please contact sarah@draiocht.ie or log on to the D15 Youth Theatre Facebook page for updates.

Cathy Henderson
Shore
Born in London, Cathy Henderson grew up in Northern Ireland before moving to Paris and then to Dublin to study at NCAD from where she graduated with a Masters of Fine Art in 1993. She has since exhibited in the UK, Ireland, France and Canada.
This current body of work was made over the last two or three years all around the Irish coast. “The most dynamic and resilient influence on my landscape work is the place where land meets the sea. My aim with these pictures is to capture the transience of the coastal view, the sense of shifting skies and the constantly fluctuating mood of weather.” Cathy Henderson
In addition to her continued fascination with landscape, Cathy also focuses much time on portraiture and figurative work. In 2007 she worked as Artist in Residence in Dublin City Council and in 2009 at St James’s Hospital, Dublin. These residencies resulted in two large scale bodies of work which documented cleansing, maintenance and technical support personnel. In 2010 she joined the Blackchurch Print Studio and in the same year she received an Arts Council Artist in the Community award to fund a visual art project with a group of long-term prisoners. She was recently awarded a commission, jointly with Robert Ballagh, to design a commemorative artwork to celebrate the centenary of the 1913 Lockout and the establishment of the ITGWU. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including the Ulster Museum, ESB and Queens University Belfast.

Thought Once Was
Chrysalis Dance Company
This double bill promises to be a visceral feast for the senses.
‘The Space Where Thought Once Was', is an exploration into Dementia. A glimpse into the minds of those in whom all powers of representation and imagery, all sense of the concrete, all sense of reality are being destroyed. Souls without a past or future stuck in a constantly changing meaningless moment. The piece is set to an original score by American composer Jesse Ronneau whose haunting work is characterised by an exploration of advanced instrumental techniques.
The second work is entitled ‘Scatenato', from the Italian musical term, meaning wild, unchained, and loose. Joining the dancers on stage will be the Contempo String Quartet, Galway's Ensemble in Residence. These virtuoso musicians will perform an original mix of Shostakovich's string quartets 8, 10 and 11 and George Crumbs Black Angels String Quartet. The choreography weaves fluidly between moments of conscious abandonment, passionate engagement and elements of stillness and power.
Company dancers Leighton Morrison, Andrea Santato, Joanne Klijn, Amy Lawson and Jane Magan feature in this work. Both pieces are choreographed by Judith Sibley.
Early Bird: €8 (book before 31 Mar 2012)
Bealtaine Price: €8

Classical Twist
Vladimir Jablokov & the Slovak Festival Orchestra Musicians
Vladimir Jablokov returns for one night only. Playing pieces from his wonderful debut CD Classical Twist: The Album, Vladimir along with his peerless band of exemplary classical musicians will perform his unique, fresh hybrid of music old and new he calls ‘Classical Twist’. From Bach to Beatles, The Stones to Strauss – Vladimir’s superb virtuoso performances delighted national audiences in 2011.
The Classical Twist show wowed audiences the length and breath of the country this past year. Since then Vladimir has released his superb debut CD Classical Twist: The Album and charmed viewers and listeners on The Late Late Show, RTE Radio 1, Lyric FM and many more.
Vladimir is one of the best young musical talents currently playing in Ireland. 'Classical Twist' showcases a dynamic band of Slovak and Irish musicians taking familiar pieces from the world of both the classics and rock-pop; and reworking them in into new, vibrant, exciting shapes.
In the world of 'Classical Twist', Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake' sees the swans flying down to Rio for the carnival, the Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black' is resprayed as a red-hot gypsy mazurka and Lynryd Skynrd's 'Freebird' takes flight into stratospheric regions previously uncharted. Sparkling champagne arrangements are poured into familiar bottles from the Strauss, Brahms and Dvorak cellars; whilst newer vintages from Messrs. Morrison, McCartney and Bowie receive the full Vladimir Classical Twist.
Vladimir Jablokov started playing the violin aged five, making his stage debut at the tender age of ten. Coming from four generations of professional music makers, with a Russian maestro for a father and five musical siblings around him at home; Vladimir is steeped in the classical tradition.
Vladimir arrived in Ireland in 2004 part of the Eastern European diaspora welcomed at the height of the Celtic Tiger years. Originally only planning to stay in Ireland for a few months; he soon found work and money hard to come by. Having little English, he quickly decided to let his music do the talking and started busking on Grafton Street. Getting a taste for live performance, he formed the Slovak Festival Quartet in 2006 with some friends.
With a burgeoning reputation, Vladimir played some of Ireland's most prestigous venues; including The National Concert Hall, The Gaeity Theatre, Marlay Park, Cork Opera House, Limerick UCH and, at the behest of then President McAleese; to an audience in Aras an Uachtarain.
