Translations by Brian Friel

Translations by Brian Friel

Dooega Drama Group

Sat 2 Feb 2013 8PM Main Auditorium // €20 / €15 conc

Translations by Brian Friel is set in the year 1833 in the hedge school of Hugh Mór ODonnell in Baile Beag a small village in Donegal where the use of Greek and Latin are commonplace. The arrival of the Royal Engineers engaged in creating an ordnance survey map leads to a clash of cultures. Owen, son of Hugh Mór acts as a translator and go-between. However when one of the engineers goes missing the destruction of the community looks immanent. Translations deals with many issues including language and communication and cultural imperialism.

Dooega Drama Group, established in 2010, originates in the small, close-knit fishing village of Dooega, Achill Island, Co Mayo, with a population of approximately 100 people. The cast, crew and community work tirelessly with enthusiasm and excitement to succeed. In December 2010 the curtain was raised on their inaugural performance of Cough Water by BJ McCarthy. The following year the group performed Many Young Men of Twenty by John B Keane which reflected the historical and indeed the current immigration epidemic which has ravished the island. The shows were so well received the group now embark on their third production, Translations. The group has performed in The TF Royal Theatre, Castlebar and in The Civic Theatre Tallaght and also in Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, Co Mayo.

Read a review from the Mayo Advertiser here ...

"Director Martan O Mongain delivers a quality version of this powerful play. The authentic set complements the atmospheric quality of lighting, dress and sound. The whole production induces realism and truth to the confusion of languages and culture of the time." Mayo Advertiser

Cosi fan Tutte / All Women are Like That

Opera Theatre Company

Tue 12 Feb 2013 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €28 / €25 conc / Early Bird: €24 (book before 31 Dec 2012)

Charming, witty and provocative, Così fan tutte is filled with beguiling arias and iconic ensembles, and explores young love and faithfulness.
In Mozart's tale of temptation and seduction, two young men make the mistake of boasting about their perfect lovers. Listening in, Don Alfonso spots a chance to make some easy money and claims that all women are fickle, wagering that these ‘constant fiancées’ can be easily seduced. Cynical and manipulative, Don Alfonso intends to win the bet, and enlists the help of the sisters’ maid, Despina.

The men accept a bet that their lovers will remain faithful no matter what. Pretending they have been called away on military service, they reappear as glamorous foreigners and attempt to seduce each other's girl. Except that things don't quite work out as planned. Beneath the surface humour of a comedy of manners, darker undertones emerge - will the two couples ever get back together? And if they do, can things ever be the same?

Filled with wry comic wit and irreverence, by the time this vivacious, intriguing opera ends, Mozart and his librettist Da Ponte, have spared no one.

Sung in English, the six piece OTC touring ensemble is conducted by Andrew Griffiths. Irish director Orpha Phelan makes her OTC debut, directing a vocally luminous cast in Mozart’s sublime romantic comedy.

Early Bird: €24 (book before 31 Dec 2012)

Eddi Reader - SOLD OUT

Fri 15 Feb 2013 8PM Main Auditorium // €20 / €18 conc

Growing up in Glasgow and Irvine, Eddi busked and performed at the local folk clubs before literally joining the circus in the early 1980s. After travelling around Europe with performance artists, Eddi moved to London where she quickly became a sought after session vocalist.  She famously harmonized with Annie Lennox, touring with the Eurythmics, after her time with successful punk outfit Gang of Four. It was the short-lived but warmly remembered Fairground Attraction that really brought Eddi Reader into the limelight and to the attention of a much wider audience. The single 'Perfect' and parent album ‘First of a Million Kisses’ both topped the British charts. Constant touring with her band has created a magical organic chemistry between Eddi and her players. Whilst renowned for her technical vocal ability, it is Eddi’s passion and instinct that combine to ensure she connects emotionally with her audience.

Eddi was awarded the MBE in 2006 for services to singing.

Maria Doyle Kennedy

Fri 22 Feb 2013 8PM Main Auditorium // €16 / €12 conc

Raven-haired Dubliner Maria Doyle Kennedy is to make good on the promise that she is “unlikely to remain Ireland’s best-kept secret for very much longer” (Hot Press Magazine)

Maria’s recent debut UK album release ‘Sing’ received glowing reviews across the board. ‘Jaw droppingly beautiful’ R2 Magazine; ‘The Kennedy voice is a persuasive weapon’ – Mojo. The record is a collection of 10 meticulously crafted songs co-written with her husband Kieran Kennedy. Maria is happiest performing live and says “Something extra happens when you’re playing live. It’s the best way to share the songs, I think. The expression of them is different and affected by the people who are in the room. You’re sharing the songs with your audience.” Maria has spent more than two decades performing all over the world before audiences ranging from tens of thousands at Glastonbury, Oxygen and the Cambridge Folk Festival, to hundreds in small, intimate theatres and now she’s coming to Draíocht.

As an actress, Maria Doyle Kennedy is possibly best known for her roles in the film The Commitments (1991), The Tudors (2007 & 2008) as Queen Katherine of Aragon, and as Vera Bates in ITV’s period drama Downton Abbey.

Caroline Moreau and Dunne & Hernandez Duo

Mon 25 Feb 2013 8.15PM Draíocht Studio // €16 / €12 conc

Three great talents combine in a dazzling and beguiling evening of music. Wonderful French Chanteuse Caroline Moreau brings her trademark charisma and exquisite vocals to delight the ear. Argentinean guitar maestro Ariel Hernandez offers passion, intensity and jaw-dropping musicality. While Dermot Dunne raises the roof with the power and sensitivity of his accordion-playing. The show features new arrangements of great cabaret classics (Piaf, Brel and Gainsbourg) fused with show-stopping tangos from Gardel and Piazzolla. This promises to be an evening that will lift your spirits, take your breath away and perhaps even bring a nostalgic tear to your eye.

Caroline grew up in the north of France, a region rich in popular culture: danse musette played on the accordion, mussels, fried potatoes and beer. She spent a lot of her time in the dark and forgotten music archives in Montmartre, in order to find some of the lost gems that are rarely sung anymore. She felt the best way to resurrect the songs, was to sing them directly to the public, by taking them to the streets. 1999: Caroline was invited to Dublin to perform as singer / accordionist in the play 'The Nude who Painted Back '. 2002: Caroline won a special jury prize in the France-wide 'Le Mans Cite Chanson'. In Dublin, her debut show 'Crime Passionnel', a heady melange of songs by Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg and Edith Piaf, among others, was delivered with passionate conviction and became a sell-out in the space of weeks. 2003: Caroline met Gypsy violin virtuoso Oleg Ponomarev and began performing with him . Autumn 2005: Caroline signed to Circular records to release her first CD 'Paris is Burning'.

"... a vibrancy that is thrilling ..." Irish Independent

"Moreau embodies the voice of each song, not only with her own very sturdy pipes, but also with her body and soul ... she becomes the entire world of the song ..." Irish Independent
