Exploring A History Of Play

Draiocht and The Community / May 2017

Mon 1 - Sat 13 May 2017

Exploring A History Of Play:
Creative Creche Project
Artists Orla Kelly and Andrew Carson will work with two Dublin 15 pre school year classes to explore and create a huge story book using the exhibition as a starting point. The project will see children of 4 and 5 years old interact and build on ideas they see in an exhibition that has been created with them in mind. We will paint, tell stories and explore what these children have to say about the art they see around them.

Exploring A History Of Play:
With Blanchardstown Institute Of Technology
Working with students from Blanchardstown Institute of Technology’s BA Degree Programme in Early Childhood Care and Education, Draíocht will discuss and explore the exhibition, in the context of early years education and training. Students will engage in an exhibition tour, workshop, lecture and open forum with artist Orla Kelly.

A History of Play is on loan from The Model, home of The Niland Collection, Sligo

North by Northwest (1959)

Wed 3 May 2017 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €7.50 / €6 conc

North by Northwest is a tale of mistaken identity. An innocent man pursued across the United States by agents of a mysterious organization, trying to prevent him from blocking their plan to smuggle out microfilm that contains government secrets. Gripping, suspenseful and visually iconic, this late-period Alfred Hitchcock classic laid the groundwork for countless action thrillers to follow and stars Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. North by Northwest is now numbered among the essential Hitchcock pictures and is often listed as one of the greatest films of all time.

The Quiet Land By Malachy McKenna

Patrick Talbot Productions / Starring Des Keogh and Derry Power & Directed by Bairbre Ni Chaoimh

Sat 6 May 2017 8PM Main Auditorium // €15 / €12 conc // Dur: 60 Mins

Two elderly farmers, Eamon and Nashee, meet at a gate on a remote hillside. These men are old friends, old rivals, old neighbours. They are men of heart, of humour, of hardness. Their conversation is a throwback to a gentler time, when silence was as telling as declaration, and meaning was more often found between the lines than on them.

But there's nothing gentle about today's conversation. In facing the bitter reality of their remote defiance, Eamon and Nashee have grown fearful and desperate. Now they are forced to confront each other with some heartbreaking truths that test their friendship to its limit. After today, will they ever again talk on this hillside?

'The Quiet Land' is a celebration of the humour, resilience and endearing innocence of an exiled generation as it struggles to survive in the isolated rural Ireland of today. It is Malachy McKenna's heartfelt tribute to a rare breed of forgotten men who live a long way in off the road.

Winner of the PJ O’Connor Award 2014

My Real Life by Eoin Colfer

Starring Don Wycherley & Directed by Ben Barnes

Fri 19 May 2017 8PM Main Auditorium // €18 / €16 conc

Theatre Royal Productions presents Sing Street star Don Wycherley in the touching and entertaining My Real Life by Eoin Colfer.
Wexford man Noel has advanced MS and decides to end it all. While waiting for his overdose to take effect he records an increasingly rambling message for his best friend. Noel has apologies to make and messages to send. He has love in his heart and he wants to declare it even if it’s already too late.  Noel spends what is possibly the last hour of his life re-living the highs and lows of the past forty years and, surprisingly perhaps, it’s not all doom and gloom.
My Real Life is a play that will make you laugh and make you cry.

Wed 24 May - Sat 24 Jun 2017 Ground & First Floor Galleries

School Portraits takes the viewer into the world of school to see contemporary artists’ representations of young people, school buildings and the wide range of activities and experiences that go on during a school day. The exhibition presents work by artist John Ahearn, photographer Mandy O’Neill and painter Blaise Smith who have immersed themselves, often for extended periods of time, to create bodies of work that capture the rich and varied moods and lived experiences of Irish school life. The exhibition will also include new work produced in a collaborative project between filmmaker Kilian Waters, Draíocht Curator-in-Residence, Sharon Murphy and Room 13 Inquiry, Dublin 15.

From classroom to playground, from close-up to group studies, from painting-from-life to filmed testimonials, this exhibition offers an extended portrait of school and an insight into the thoughts and feelings of young people who go there every day.

Room 13 International is a network of student-run arts studios in schools and community settings worldwide. Room 13 Scoil Bhríde National School and Room 13 Tyrrelstown Educate Together National School both located in Dublin 15 are the first two Room 13 studios to open in the Republic of Ireland. Free Bealtaine Movie Screening in Association with Access>Cinema

Wed 24 May 2017 7.30PM Main Auditorium // FREE

It's Summer 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power, and the National Union of Mineworkers are on strike! At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But the only problem is the Union seems too embarrassed to receive their support.
Not discouraged, the activists ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a small mining villiage in Wales to make their donations to the community in person. This journey begins a surprising partnership between two seemingly alien comunties as they fight for the same cause.

Pride stars Bill Nighy, Adrew Scott, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Joseph Gilgun, Paddy Considine, George MacKay, Ben Schnetzer, Sophie Evans, Jessie Cave, Freddie Fox, Faye Marsay, Adrian Palmer, Lasco Atkins and Shane Salter.

Amor În Farmacie - Love Story at the Pharmacy

Amor În Farmacie - Love Story at the Pharmacy

Sun 28 May 2017 5PM Main Auditorium // €25

Romanian Community of Ireland presents Amor În Farmacie - Love Story at the Pharmacy. The show is presented in Romanian only as part of the Celebration of Romanians in Ireland.

We would love to invite the public to a show of great elegance, a slapstick comedy by the French classic Eugene Labiche, a master of quid-pro-quo’s and changes of comic situations, and at the same time, a bitter critic of morality.
A province pharmacist terrorised by a fiery and jealous wife, in cahoots with their co-habitant, Dr. X, who has a young and attractive wife, with a miraculous purgative honey...
The sudden arrival from Canada of the ex-suitor to the doctor’s wife’s hand, pushed aside by the denouncements of the current husband, brings a series of entanglements, of unpredictable comic situations that the public discovers and savours in delight.

The play, directed by the master Dan Tudor, is interpreted exceptionally by the actors: Anca Turcașiu, Andrei Duban , Liliana Pană, Dragoş Ionescu  and Dan Tudor.
