Collapsing Horse
Theatre Artists in Residence 2016-2018

Draíocht is delighted to have worked with Collapsing Horse as Theatre Artists in Residence since 2016. As that comes to an end, we look back at what they've done, achieved here and contributed to the Draíocht community.

In this time, they've made use of our facilities to develop, hone and show their work to Draíocht audiences and to exchange with D15 Youth Theatre over a series of workshops that spanned areas of puppetry, illusion, performance and dance. They rehearsed and presented their show ‘Human Child’ in our Studio before it embarked on a tour of Ireland and Russia. They made use of our technical facilities to develop ‘Conor: at the end of the Universe’, a piece for 4-6 years olds about relativity and time travel which made extensive use of animation and audiovisual elements. They've recently been working with actors and dancers to develop ‘Dance Plague’, a piece inspired by the dancing mania in Strasbourg in 1518 and the life of Isadora Duncan the ‘grandmother of contemporary dance’.

This is not the end though of Collapsing Horse's relationship with Draíocht. Writer/Director Dan Colley will write the script of ‘Dance Plague’ while in the Centre Culturel Irlandais Paris as part of the Draíocht and CCI Artist Residency Programme 2018-2019 and Draíocht will support and present the production here next year.

The Collapsing Horse Draíocht Residency was supported by Fingal County Council and The Arts Council.

COLLAPSING HORSE – THEATRE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE 2016-2018

Draíocht is delighted to continue working with Collapsing Horse as Theatre Artists in Residence during 2017-2018.

Their work with D15 Youth Theatre over the mid-term with choreographer Liv O'Donoghue explored areas of dance, movement and choreography in theatre. Later this year they will be working with Liv and D15 Youth Theatre again, this time to develop a new Collapsing Horse dance/theatre show for teenagers called ‘Dance Plague’, inspired by the dancing plagues of the middle ages.

Collapsing Horse, the makers of ‘MONSTER/CLOCK’; ‘Distance from the Event’; ‘Bears in Space’; ‘The Aeneid’ and ‘Conor: at the end of the Universe’, recently presented their brand new comedy show in Project Arts Centre, ‘The Water Orchard’.

One of Collapsing Horse’s strengths is its commitment to theatrical fundamentals … executed with wit and skill … there’s no shortage of emotion, intricacy or craft … One of the finest groups of artists to emerge in recent years’.

COLLAPSING HORSE – THEATRE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE 2016/2017

In February Collapsing Horse continued working with Draíocht’s very talented and dedicated D15 Youth Theatre. Last year we worked with puppetry and the idea that theatre is a combination of ‘illusion and the thing you can't fake’. This year, participants will be working with Choreographer, Liv O'Donoghue and Collapsing Horse Director, Dan Colley to explore movement, expression and storytelling. We'll be asking; What can be communicated through the movement of the body that can't be communicated through words? What does it feel like to dance and to watch people dancing? And how can we create beautiful, interesting and moving choreography ourselves?

This is all just the start of a year of activity which will include workshops for primary school students, rehearsals of our new show The Water Orchard, the beginnings of a Dance/Theatre piece for children and performances of Collapsing Hose shows from our repertoire.

Collapsing Horse’s Conor at the end of the Universe will premiere at Draiocht in October

August 10, 2016

COLLAPSING HORSE – THEATRE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE 2016/2017

Collapsing Horse are striding through this year’s Residency at Draíocht. We are delighted to announce that Collapsing Horse will be continuing their residency and partnership with Draíocht through 2017.

In May and June we worked with animator Jody Barker Rockett, AV designer Mick Cullinan, composer Dan Forde and performers Manus Halligan with Aoife Leonard on our new piece Conor: at the end of the Universe (previously titled 46 Billion Light Years From Home).

We are delighted to announce Conor: at the end of the Universe will premiere at Draíocht in October with a total of 4 performances. Part puppet show, part installation piece, part animated film, part immersive experience, part ballet; Conor is a sensory and artistic journey through space at time-bending speeds. This stunning and engaging production uses puppets, design, animation and music as Conor and his granddad bring you places that you've never seen before.

In other news from Collapsing Horse, we have been announced as the new Artistic Directors of the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival in 2017 and our new show The Aeneid has been announced as one of the Tiger Dublin Fringe programme highlights and will run from the 14-24 September. The support and resources of our Residency in Draíocht has allowed us to be bold and make work inside and outside of Draíocht itself.

Supported by Draíocht, Fingal County Council and the Arts Council through Collapsing Horse’s Theatre Artist in Residency programme at Draíocht.
