Phil Coulter - Gold & Silver Days

Tue 4 Dec 2018 8PM Main Auditorium // €30 / €27.50 conc

Phil’s long career as a songwriter, producer and recording artiste has been recognised over the years with so many gold discs that the theme is totally appropriate.
Very few in the music business can boast of having chart entries in every decade since the sixties. Even fewer can match the range of Phil’s output – from Eurovision winners to folk classics, from tender ballads to sporting anthems, from Luke Kelly to Elvis Presley!

His new show, Gold & Silver Days, will feature Phil’s personal favourites as he trawls through his 50 years of creativity.   As he says himself, “It will be a different and interesting collection – some of the big hits alongside some that I thought should have been hits!   Some songs that meant a lot to my bank manager as well as some that simply meant a lot to me”.
An original retrospective on the work of one of our finest, it’s a show for every lover of good music.

What Good is Looking Well When You’re Rotten on the Inside?

Written and performed by Emma O'Grady

Thu 6 Dec 2018 8.15PM Draíocht Studio // €16 / €14 conc

One month before his death, retired civil servant and man of few words Paddy O’Grady had a sudden urge to talk. Using a portable cassette tape recorder, he recorded 15 hours of material: stories about leprechauns, aliens and lonely pharmacists; absurdist political satire; musings on life, love and death; radio shows with advertisements for products that never existed; ballads and poetry and memories of life as a civil servant.

Paddy’s granddaughter, Emma O’Grady, later discovered he had written plays, poems and short stories in the 1950s and until now his work has been without an audience. This one-woman show examines the fractured and fragile personas we present to the world, who we might be behind them and what we could be instead. A piece about emotional inheritance and grief for wasted creativity that serves as both a tribute and a warning.

Supported by the Arts Council, Galway City Council, Galway Theatre Festival, Mermaid Arts Centre and Áras Éanna (Inis Oírr)
Directed by: Jonathan Gunning, Catherine Ireton, Caroline Lynch, Andy Smith.

Michael Harding: On Tuesdays I’m a Buddhist

Fri 7 - Sat 8 Dec 2018 8PM Main Auditorium // €20 / €18 conc

Join Michael Harding as he reads from his latest memoir, ruminates on the difference between psychotherapy and religion and relates the story of his pilgrimage to Skellig Michael, in his ongoing search for meaning.

After many therapy sessions focused on an effort to uncover personal truth, and long solitary months on the road with a one man show, Harding is finally led to an artists' retreat in the shadow of Skellig Michael. Mixing stories from the road with dispatches from his Irish Times columns, On Tuesdays I'm a Buddhist is a spell-binding and powerful book about the human condition, the narratives we weave around the self, and the ultimate bliss of living in the present moment.

'What happens between one story and the next? That's the really interesting part. That's the space where we find bliss; where we float sometimes, suspended, and only for a brief moment. Perhaps only for a few scarce moments in an entire life.'

Epiphany - Based on James Joyce’s ‘The Dead’

Anaverna Productions

Sat 15 Dec 2018 8.15PM Draíocht Studio // €16 / €14 conc

A young Irish migrant tumbles upon James Joyce's 'The Dead' in a German library and borrows a copy to read over his first Christmas away from home. Declan Gorman's new solo show combines autobiography with a magical telling of Joyce's great story evoking a snow-coated festive evening in Edwardian Dublin. Reading 'The Dead' awakens unexpected emotions and literary longings in the mind of the would-be writer. Gorman's performance skilfully blends Joyce's masterpiece of a man falling apart with an honest and often hilarious look-back at a life spent chasing the wrong dreams. Long-awaited follow up to Gorman's internationally acclaimed 'The Dubliners Dilemma', this is the perfect pre-Christmas entertainment for theatre lovers.

Directed by Gerard Lee. Written and performed by Declan Gorman. Age 13+.
Developed with the support of bursaries from The Arts Council and Fingal County Council.

It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

Cinema at Draiocht

Wed 19 Dec 2018 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €7.50 / €6 conc / €5 children

This moving and beautifully told film is a true masterpiece of cinema. George Bailey (James Stuart) is in turmoil, having been framed by his arch rival. He’s torn between his own desires and aspirations, but struggling to always do the right thing. This inner conflict proves too much for Bailey, who sees suicide as the only option. In classic Hollywood style, Heaven sends a guardian angel to remind him how worthwhile his life has been and to treasure the good times.
