Shoplifters (2018)

Cinema at Draiocht

Wed 12 Jun 2019 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €7.50 / €6 conc

Director Kore-Eda Hirokazu’s new film Shoplifters, is a subtle and moving drama about the forces holding a struggling family together. Osamu (Lily Franky), his wife Nobuyu (Sakura Andô) and grandma Hatsue (Kirin Kiki) are the Shibatas, a family living just above the poverty line. When they take in what appears to be an abandoned little girl, this brittle and unconventional family unravels. Shoplifters is a brilliant and nuanced moral inquiry. Tender, compassionate but also enduringly humorous, Kore-Eda unfolds a drama which is profoundly moving. In the process conspicuously revealing a Japan rarely seen.

PLATFORM 2019 is an exhibition and a series of associated performance events showcasing the work of emerging artists who engage with the Gallery as a playful, experimental and creative space.

GROUP features the eclectic work of 6 early career artists who use a wide range of media to explore their concerns:

Victoria J Dean is a photographic artist whose work explores the human propensity to rationalise space, in the context of place and landscape. Sarah Farrell's work explores and articulates the fragility implicit in personal relationships and the human experience. Her practice centres on painting, photography and sculptural forms. Cara Farnan's work attempts to find balance within the contradictions of knowledge and sensation, exploring the space between the two through sculpture, installation, sound, text, video, drawing and print. Anna Hryniewicz is a painter whose work explores abstraction, form and colour and which is strongly influenced by memories of childhood drawn from the natural world. Riin Kaljurand is a painter whose interest lies in paint itself – its physical quality and formability. Her work is influenced by her geopolitical origins in the former Estonia Soviet Socialist Republic. Éanna Mac Cana uses video and multimedia installation to explore themes of the everyday imbued with a deeper personal significance. A sudden sense of loss and identity are key themes within the works, as he explores both physical and psychological boundaries. Conor Coady's practice is concerned with the unseen internal becoming an external physical experience. Through his performance art practice, he investigates oppressive social structures that queer individuals are subject to, referencing both historic and contemporary Ireland. Oran Leong is a dancer whose practice encompasses contemporary and Irish dance. He works both collaboratively with theatre practitioners, choreographers and ensembles as well as choreographing his own solo work.

SOLO is Draíocht’s INCUBATE commission 2019 from Ashling Smith and will be the artist's first solo exhibition. Winner of Draíocht’s inaugural Creative Digital Media Award 2018 (in association with the Technological University Dublin, Blanchardstown), Smith will present a new site- specific, digital media work combining image, sound, text and installation. Ashling’s practice incorporates still and moving image, sound and text. In her practice she gathers personal narratives that explore the boundary of the real and the imagined in relation to specific communities and places. For this commission, Smith explores memories and reflections via the family's analogue film photo album.

Draiocht's Galleries are open Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm. Admission is Free.
