Apollo 11 (2019)

The cinematic event 50 years in the making!

Wed 11 Sep 2019 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €7.50 / €6 conc / €5 children

From director Todd Douglas Miller (Dinosaur 13) comes a cinematic event 50 years in the making. Crafted from a newly discovered trove of never-before seen footage and audio recordings, Apollo 11 takes us straight to the heart of NASA’s most celebrated mission - the one that first put men on the moon, and forever made Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin into household names. Immersed in the perspectives of the astronauts, the team in Mission Control, and the millions of spectators on the ground, we vividly experience those momentous days and hours in 1969 when humankind took a giant leap into the future.

ESTUARY

An exhibition celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Fingal County Council Municipal Art Collection

Thu 12 Sep - Sat 16 Nov 2019 Ground & First Floor Galleries // FREE

Fingal County Council is proud to present this major exhibition curated by Una Sealy RHA, James English RHA, Joshua Sex and Sanja Todorovic. The collection comprises of works by national and international artists, graduates, emerging artists and local artists. Over 160 artworks have been acquired since the collection began in 1994 and it has been continually evolving since with new acquisitions being added when the opportunity and resources present themselves.

The curators are all Fingal artists, whose art also features in the collection. They describe their process of selecting work for this exhibition as taking in the physical and natural landscape of Fingal and celebrating local and visiting artists that have arrived to the county through the collection. The official motto of Fingal County Council is Flúirse Talaimh is Mara — the abundance of land and sea, which is reflected in some of the artworks featured in the exhibition.

Fingal has three estuaries, special places where the tide meets the stream. Such a simple phenomenon in nature carries powerful potential both metaphorically and as a prism through which to view art. In other words, the collection could be described as a mixing point or a meeting point. While the collection features plenty of significant works by national figures, the four of us agreed, quite instinctively, to focus primarily on Fingal artists. There is a strong flow of nature imagery: skies, birds, harbours, trees. We have also chosen works that we intend as counterpoints to this theme. These include unexpected pieces by artists such as Robert Russell and Eva Rothschild. It is our hope that this show will prove playful, thought-provoking and inspiring.” Joshua Sex

The Exhibition will be accompanied by ‘Not in Alphabetical Order’ Vol 2, a publication highlighting this significant collection’s latest acquisitions.

The Exhibition is accompanied by a Free Adult Engagement Programme.

Draiocht's Galleries are open Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm. Admission is Free.

The Legend of Luke Kelly with Chris Kavanagh 2019

Sat 14 Sep 2019 8PM Main Auditorium // €20 / €18 conc

On 30th January 1984 it is said that the whole of Dublin grieved the early death of Dubliner legend Luke Kelly who has left an indelible mark as being the greatest folk artist of the 20th Century and whose music is widely regarded as one of Ireland's cultural treasures.

Dublin singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Kavanagh was raised on Irish music and has been singing Irish folk songs since he was three years old. He learned to play the piano by ear when he was five and his love and passion for Luke Kelly's music led him to learn to play the 5 string long neck banjo. Over the past sixteen years he has amazed audiences following powerful sell-out performances in prominent Irish venues such as Vicar Street & the Cork Opera House with the regular attendance of Luke Kelly's family. He has also toured this show abroad in England, Switzerland, Germany and Australia and in November 2011 Chris stood in with folk legends The Dubliners on their German tour and also made a guest appearance on their 50th anniversary concert DVD recorded in Vicar Street. When Chris sings, his talents capture the depth and passion of the great man that he was so heavily influenced by. He is joined on stage by one of Irelands leading guitarist/composers, Michael Howard and traditional musician Joe Finn on Uilleann pipes, Whistle, Flute & fiddle and Hilary Kavanagh, singer, songwriter and bass player.
