What if Ireland was still part of the United Kingdom? What if Home Rule had passed? What if there was no War of Independence? No Civil War? No partition? What if the island had only one soccer team? The year is 2019 and it is the eve of the Referendum. British Prime Minister Ursula Lysaght is returning to her hometown of Dublin to convince voters to Remain. With the threat of chaos in the streets, and personal conflict behind the scenes, the final debate is set to begin at BBC Dublin: Should Ireland leave the UK?
The Alternative by Michael Patrick and Oisín Kearney is the chosen play from the A Play for Ireland project. As part of its 30th year in 2018, Fishamble set out to find one big, ambitious play, that bursts with humanity, and tackles a subject about which the playwright feels passionate - A PLAY FOR IRELAND. This was a two-year process, in association with Draíocht, The Everyman, Lime Tree Theatre/Belltable, Lyric Theatre, Pavilion Theatre, and Town Hall Theatre, which encouraged writers to create ambitious plays that burst with humanity.

Fishamble is an Olivier Award-winning internationally acclaimed Irish theatre company, dedicated to the discovery, development and production of new work.
Fishamble's A Play For Ireland programme is supported by Tesco Finest, and transportation partner Irish Rail. This production is funded by The Arts Council.

Red Joan (2018)

Wed 9 Oct 2019 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €7.50 / €6 conc

In a picturesque village in England, Joan Stanley (Academy award winner Dame Judi Dench), lives in contented retirement. Then suddenly her tranquil existence is shattered as she's shockingly arrested by MI5. For Joan has been hiding an incredible past; she is one of the most influential spies in living history ...

Cambridge University in the 1930s, and the young Joan (Sophie Cookson), a demure physics student, falls intensely in love with a seductively attractive Russian saboteur, Leo. Through him, she begins to see that the world is on a knife-edge and perhaps must be saved from itself in the race to military supremacy. Post-war and now working at a top secret nuclear research facility, Joan is confronted with the impossible: Would you betray your country and your loved ones, if it meant saving them? What price would you pay for peace? Inspired by an extraordinary true story, Red Joan is the taut and emotional discovery of one woman's sacrifice in the face of incredible circumstances. A woman to whom we perhaps all owe our freedom.

The classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated by director Baz Luhrmann to a post-modern Verona Beach where swords are merely a brand of gun and bored youths are easily spurred toward violence. Longtime rivals in religion and business, the Montagues and the Capulets share a page from the Jets and Sharks of West Side Story when they form rival gangs. At a party thrown by the Capulets, their teenage children, Romeo Montague (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet Capulet (Clare Danes), meet and quickly fall in love. They race towards a secret marriage, and when it seems that there may be some hope to bring the two warring sides together, events take a tragic turn.

In a handball alley between three concrete walls, a conversation is taking place between a hurler, an artist and a musician. Timmy is contemplating life outside the sporting institution that raised him: the GAA. Must he go back to fully understand? Where is the individual within the team? Why are emotions suppressed for a stronger exterior? Can we talk about this?

‘Spliced' is an autobiographical multi-disciplinary piece from one of the country's most exciting upcoming writers and performers, Timmy Creed. Hard-hitting, honest and brave; this new collaboration by Creed, along with David Mathúna (visual artist), Chris Somers (composer), produced by Mags Keohane, and directed by Gina Moxley, shines a light on the fragility of the sportsman behind the mask, and begins a conversation about identity and mental health in Ireland's largest sporting institution, the GAA.

Float Like A Butterfly (2018)

Wed 23 Oct 2019 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €7.50 / €6 conc

From the producers of ‘Once’ and ‘Sing Street’, comes ‘Float Like a Butterfly’, a powerful and timely story of a girl's fight for freedom and belonging. In a gender-reversal of classic film Billy Elliot and inspired vaguely by Katie Taylor, the film concerns a young 15 year old Traveller girl who, as a huge fan of Mohammad Ali, trains herself into a state of boxing excellence. Frances (Hazel Doupe) is determined to make her ex-convict father Michael (Dara Devaney) proud, but she soon comes to realize he's got other plans for her. Patriarchal and controlling, her father, once her greatest ally, is too defeated himself to imagine any better for his daughter. Michael demands that Frances adhere to tradition and leave her love of boxing behind. But Frances was not born to be broken. In the mother of all fights, she must dig deep to find in herself the Champion her father once knew her to be.

Director Carmel Winters has crafted a warm celebratory film giving voice to an independent, fun and determined young woman. Float Like a Butterfly is a crowd-pleasing delight.
Winner, Audience Award, Best Film, Cork International Film Festival 2018.

William Shakespeare’s Hamlet returns in this National Theatre Live presentation, first staged in 2015. Lyndsey Turner directs with visual flair and gothic sensibility while Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a masterful interpretation of a Hamlet profoundly torn.

This production renders Shakespeare’s protagonist identifiable to a new generation.

Dickie Rock is one of Ireland’s most loved and recognised singers and still attracts a huge following of fans from all around the world. He has been performing and packing out venues throughout Ireland and Europe for over fifty years and is still going as strong as ever! From 1963 to 1983, Dickie had 25 Irish hits, surpassed only by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones. During his time with the Miami Showband, Dickie attracted the kind of mass hysteria normally reserved for boybands like Westlife.

Star of Sunshine Radio, Paddy Cole is legendary in Irish show business, ever since he first came to prominence in the 1960s with the Capitol Showband. He still attracts many of the people who danced in those days to his shows today. Paddy is renowned for giving audiences a good time - whether it’s jazz, rock ‘n roll, sixties or swing – the result is always the same – a thrilled and ecstatic reaction.

Starring Katherine Lynch & Shane O’Reilly

Sat 26 Oct 2019 8PM / Dur: 65 mins / Age: 14+ Main Auditorium // €20 / €18 conc / Groups 10+ €16

Madhouse is based on the unbelievable true life story of comedian PJ Gallagher.

When PJ was ten, his Ma, a nurse, moved six men with schizophrenia into the family home to care for them full time. Many psychiatric institutions were closing down and there were few places for long term residents to go. She did everything for them from administering their medication to cutting their hair.

“It was like this. When you went through our front door and turned right, you were in mad land, where the mad lads lived. And when you turned left - me, Ma, Da and the dog.  And me like a little waiter running down with their pills and dinner, a plate in each hand. It was madness. Absolute madness.”

Written by Una McKevitt and PJ Gallagher, Madhouse was a smash-hit sell-out critical success when it premiered at Dublin Fringe in September 2018.
Starring Katherine Lynch and Shane O’Reilly, and directed by Una McKevitt.

“The first time we did the show I was nervous what my Ma would make of it,” says PJ, “but she absolutely loved it, so I’m excited for the tour now. Having lived through the madness I reckon I might as well try and make a few quid from it!”

Please note this performance contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature. Suitable for 14+
