What happens when a touring stand-up comedian can no longer stand up? After a near career-ending knee injury, O'Brien is too young for pilates and too unbalanced for yoga. This award-winning performer brings you his hilarious new hour of stand-up where self-destruction and self-discovery meet! ‘Reformer’ completely sold out its month-long run of shows at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Galway International Arts Festival, as well as a European and US tour and now he’s back touring the show nationwide and beyond!
Following in the footsteps of Tommy Tiernan and Dylan Moran, Danny was handpicked this year to perform as part of the iconic ‘Best of the Edinburgh Fest’ show touring Australia. He has also featured on The Comedy Channel and is a regular on Irish TV and Radio. He has supported Today FM’s Dermot & Dave on three live tours and last year was asked to open for American comedian Bill Burr in front of over 7,000 people in Dublin.

The Truth (La Vérité) (2019)

Wed 14 Oct 2020 7.30PM Main Auditorium // €7.50 / €6 conc

Legends of French cinema Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche come together on screen for the first time in ‘The Truth’, Oscar-nominated director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s heartwarming first feature set outside his native Japan. Fabienne (Deneuve) is an ageing French movie icon who, despite her momentary lapses in memory, remains a venerable force to be reckoned with. Upon the publication of her memoirs, her daughter Lumir (Binoche) returns to Paris from New York with her husband (played by Ethan Hawke) and their young daughter to commemorate its release. Sparks immediately begin to fly between the mother-daughter duo when Lumir takes issue with Fabienne’s rose-tinted version of the past. Yet, as the past is gradually confronted, their strained relationship takes a poignant journey toward possible reconciliation.

Kore-eda’s charming follow-up to the Palme d’Or-winning ‘Shoplifters’, ‘The Truth’ paints a moving portrait of family dynamics and human relationships, featuring exquisite performances from its all-star cast.

Last summer, Fede and his 74-year-old mother set off on a quest through Havana to look for América. Shared memories, conflicting recollections and offline maps led them through their past. A past peopled with ghosts scattered among grand avenues, dark lanes and unnerving dead ends in the city that had taken them in, more than 30 years before. They spoke to shop-keepers, taxi drivers, old ladies and more importantly to each other. When they were about to give up, they found her.

Following his Father’s arrest by a Military Junta, at the age of five, Fede and his family were forced to flee the Salvadoran Civil war. There followed years of continuous moving throughout Latin America with his mother and brother as they sought sanctuary.

Looking for América charts two journeys. The journey of that night in Havana looking for a Salvadoran ex-Guerilla fighter called América, and the journey of escaping the catastrophe that had engulfed his country decades before.  A catastrophe whose after effects still resonate today.

Sometimes the idea of home has to be remade. And remade. And remade.

Mary Coughlan - Life Stories

Fri 16 Oct 2020 8PM Main Auditorium // €25 / €23 conc

Mary Coughlan is arguably the greatest female singer to have emerged from Ireland in recent times. Whether you’re into folk, blues or jazz, you can’t fail to be moved by the emotional depth, expression and power in her voice, forged from an extraordinary life. To hear Mary sing is truly to be at the core of the human heart. Throughout 30 years of her quite extraordinary life and recording career, Mary has drawn heavily from her legendary heroes: the grievous, teary outpourings of Billie Holiday (to whom she devoted a double album of her songs), the husky flirtations of Peggy Lee, Van Morrison’s soulful wails and the defiant chanteusery of Edith Piaf. In June 2020, in recognition of Mary’s achievements and immense impact on the culture and arts community in Galway City, the Mayor, Mike Cubbard presented her with a 2020 lifetime achievement award. Her new album ‘Life Stories’ (released Sept 2020) was mostly written and recorded by Pete Glenister and Mary Coughlan at No Name Studio.

The Happy Prince & The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde

The Happy Prince & The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde

Bewley’s Café Theatre & The Wilde Garden Adventure

Sat 17 Oct 2020 12 NOON & 3PM / Age 5+ / Dur: 50 mins Main Auditorium // €7 / €5 conc

The Happy Prince is perhaps the best loved and most enduringly popular of all Oscar Wilde’s stories. It is the bittersweet tale of a gregarious swallow who befriends a melancholy statue while en route to Egypt. The bird helps the Prince to alleviate the suffering of his poor citizens and in doing so learns profound truths about the nature of love and suffering. This masterful piece of storytelling by Michael James Ford is accompanied by a haunting new score by Philip Dodd.

The Happy Prince is paired with a new production of The Selfish Giant, Wilde’s delightful exploration of selfishness, love and redemption. Michael James Ford co-stars with well-known actress Bairbre Ní Chaoimh, along with three enchanting puppet children, created by Martin Cahill.

This family double-bill will start with The Selfish Giant (15 mins), followed by The Happy Prince (35 mins).
