The Man Who Wanted to Fly (2018)
Cinema at Draiocht
Bobby and Ernie Coote are brothers from County Cavan who lead relaxed rural lives content in their daily routines of fixing watches, making violins from old furniture and talking to distant friends on ham radio. All's well and good, except Bobby has a dream, a dream he’s had all his life – at eighty-something he’s decided he’s going to fly. Bobby left school at 13 and says his reading and writing isn't great. Not fussed too much by technical details he has an intuitive grip on all things mechanical and buys a microlite which he tinkers with. He finds a friendly engineer who recognises a flying bug when he sees it and resolves to help to repair the plane to make it airworthy. With no encouragement from his brother Ernie, who thinks the whole thing is mad, Bobby says he’ll make this happen … even if it’s the last thing he does.
Capturing the wonder of one man’s dreams, this seat-of-the-pants documentary film is a unique journey into a disappearing Irish border hinterland. Directed by Frank Shouldice, an award winning journalist and playwright, ‘The Man Who Wanted to Fly’, is an affectionate character portrait but with an unexpected Hollywood twist. A published author and winner of Prix Europa for his radio documentary work, Frank’s plays have graced stages all over the world.
