August - December 2005
From the beginning of August 2005, John Beattie took up residency in the artists studio in Draíocht.
Originally from Co. Donegal, John lived in Derry for two years where he completed a GNVQ in Art & Design 1997-1999. After this, he decided to live and work as a student at The National College of Art & Design Dublin, where he graduated from a four year BA in Art & Design Education 1999–2003. Straight after his degree he felt the need to further his research and develop his practice through a Master in Fine Art at the University of Ulster, where he graduated in 2005. He has exhibited in numerous group shows locally and internationally, including at The Liverpool Biennale 2004 ‘The John Moores 23, Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and Drawing’ at the Walker Museum Liverpool. Also, he exhibited in the ‘Emerging Artists’ in The Ashford Gallery at the RHA Dublin, and received an Open ev+a Award a ev+a 2005 exhibition at Limerick City Art Gallery, curated by Dan Cameron of The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.
During his time in NCAD in Art & Design Education 1999–2003, he worked with many schools, groups, and educational programmes in Galleries such as The Douglas Hyde Gallery in collaboration with the Stoneybatter Retirement Group Dublin 2002.
Currently (2005), he is Head of Visual Art for a cross border programme based in Derry called ‘ North West Academy of Art’.
