Event2022 Blackwater Lightship Preview

Previews in Draíocht ahead of its World Premiere in DTF22, Colm Tóibín’s piercing novel about a broken family, making a family of your own and the cost of caring for each other.

‘When I was young, lying in bed, I used to believe that Tuskar was a man and the Blackwater Lightship was a woman and they were both sending signals to each other and to other lighthouses, like mating calls.’

It’s 1990s Ireland and HIV/AIDS is still a life sentence. A sister, a mother and a grandmother, along with two gay friends, have come together to tend to 29-year-old Declan, who is dying of the disease. This strange new family unit are forced to confront the illness and each other. Can this makeshift family unit face up to the illness and each other.
