34th Anniversary Concert - Celebrating the memory and music of a true Irish musical legend

Fri 16 Mar 2018 8PM Main Auditorium // €20 / €18 conc

ALMOST SOLD OUT

On 30th January 1984 it is said that the whole of Dublin grieved the early death of Dubliner legend Luke Kelly who has left an indelible mark as being the greatest folk artist of the 20th Century and whose music is widely regarded as one of Ireland's cultural treasures.

Dublin singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Kavanagh was raised on Irish music and has been singing Irish folk songs since he was three years old. He learned to play the piano by ear when he was five and his love and passion for Luke Kelly's music led him to learn to play the 5 string long neck banjo. Over the past sixteen years he has amazed audiences following powerful sell-out performances in prominent Irish venues such as Vicar Street & the Cork Opera House with the regular attendance of Luke Kelly's family. He has also toured this show abroad in England, Switzerland, Germany and Australia and in November 2011 Chris stood in with folk legends The Dubliners on their German tour and also made a guest appearance on their 50th anniversary concert DVD recorded in Vicar Street. When Chris sings, his talents capture the depth and passion of the great man that he was so heavily influenced by. He is joined on stage by one of Irelands leading guitarist/composers, Michael Howard and traditional musician Joe Finn on Uilleann pipes, Whistle, Flute & fiddle and Hilary Kavanagh, singer, songwriter and bass player.

In a career spanning 50 years, his greatest achievement is a quartet of epic song collections - Just Another Town, To The Light, The Voyage and Flame - which correspond to the four chapters of his lyrical autobiography, TO THE LIGHT.
Sylvie Simmons (author of the acclaimed Leonard Cohen biography I’m Your Man) had this to say about Johnny’s prose autobiography 'There is a Time'; “When I started to read it I couldn’t put it down. He has such a way with words...”
Johnny’s songs are sung worldwide in a variety of languages, thanks to the focus put on them by Christy Moore, The Dubliners, Mary Black and hosts of other Irish and international singers. His song The Voyage has become a modern classic. Christy Moore has termed Johnny “One of our greatest songwriters.” And the late Ronnie Drew described him as “one of my favourite songwriters.”

Shout! The Mod Musical

A Nostalgic Nod to London’s Swinging Sixties

Thu 17 May 2018 8PM Main Auditorium // €18 / €16 conc

The musical follows five young female subscribers to a fictional magazine called Shout!, ‘the magazine for the modern woman’, as they come of age during the liberating 1960s that made England swing. From cover to cover, Shout! unfolds like a musical magazine and travels in time through the decade, chronicling the dawn of liberation of women. Just as Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Cilla Black and Lulu were independent women with major careers, English (and indeed Irish!) women were redefining themselves in the face of changing attitudes about women. Shout! and its all-female cast reflect that change through the unforgettable music of the era. Featuring some of the top musical theatre performers Ireland has to offer, Shout! wears its heart on its sleeve, but also has its tongue firmly planted in its cheek. The groovy blend of foot-stomping songs, eye-popping fashions, bouffant hairstyles, hilarious stories and mod musings will make you want to throw your head back … and SHOUT!
