DRAÍOCHT INCUBATE is a new series of short studio residencies for emerging, early career artists, curators and collectives who wish to have time and space to research, test new ideas, and develop new work. We are delighted to announce four new Incubation artists whose diverse practices chime with Draíocht’s interest in interdisciplinary practice; visual culture and new technologies; socially engaged and collaborative practices; visual arts practice for children and young people.
Sarah Farrell is a recent graduate of NCAD whose practice is based in painting, drawing, photography and sculptural forms. Her work is informed by her period of practice as a barrister specialising in immigration law, family law, child protection law and human rights law and by her research interests in vulnerability and our capacity to negotiate the unpredictable. Finding narrative and the impulse to ‘make sense of things’ are preoccupations which come to the surface in her painting. Her practice explores fragility, vulnerability and resilience and how we acknowledge and respond to uncertainty. Her artistic research into provisional accommodation and temporary shelters resulted in a recent series of painted works on fragile surfaces, lightweight layered boards and readymade panels.
During her Incubate Studio Residency, Sarah wishes to engage in research around the concerns of temporary communities and communities in flux with a particular focus on children in those environments. This research will explore the extent to which temporary, provisional or fragile structures or living arrangements impact on the psychological health and well-being of children and their carers and how the temporary nature of a community may affect residents’ resilience and their responses to change and uncertainty with a particular focus on incorporating the child’s voice into the resulting work.
Recent exhibitions include plot and piece in Pallas Projects/Studios (June 2017). She is currently developing a new body of work at Pallas Projects/Studios.
