Building Castles in the Air was a sculpture made from hundreds of cardboard boxes that ranged in scale from matchboxes to large kitchen appliance boxes. This sculpture grew and staggered upwards like a spider's web from the ground floor foyer up through the space between the window and the mezzanine eventually latching onto the ceiling high above the viewers head. It began at the base with tiny boxes which gradually grew bigger and bigger as it reached up creating a giant top heavy structure.
Madden makes no attempt to paint or alter the boxes in any way, resulting in a structure that appears like a live monument to packaging and capitalism. Both children and adults will have fun finding all the familiar packages from their store cupboards and favourite products.
Maggie Madden graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1998 and an MA in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design in 2006.
