Draíocht was delighted to host this first solo exhibition by Daniel Shaw Smith, a previous artist-in-residence at Draíocht from June to November, 2004.
This body of work consisted of recent paintings, sculptures and found assemblages inspired by Ireland and travels abroad. The title of the show refers to the bombastic 19th century American hymn written to a military tune by J.W. Howe. Daniel remembered that he often got carried away when singing this hymn in school and sometimes when working on a specific project he gets carried away in a similar fashion. This led him to describe his then on-going project, the painting installation “A Fighting Year” as “starting out painting a few images, I quickly entered into a creative mantra and worked steadily towards my goal, which was a victory of sorts.”
Daniel Shaw-Smith, born in Dublin, graduated from NCAD in 2001 with a BA in Fine Art Print. He was recipient of the prestigious CAP Foundation Award in 2001, an award made to two final year students of outstanding merit at NCAD.
