Blanchardstown artist David Balfe presented his first solo exhibition in both the Ground and First Floor Galleries opened on February 5th 2004.
In 2002 Balfe spent six months as artist in residence at Draíocht and since then had been working towards this exhibition in his Corduff studio.
In this show David has focused on examining the pace of decay taking place in the world around us. Using found objects in a gallery installation, mixed media paintings and close up observational drawings Balfe draws our attention to the cycle of manufacturing, refuse and eventual decomposition of consumer products.
As David Balfe writes:
"Fire, Rain, Wind…natural processes which breakdown the material world serve as a reminder to me of artistic/creative processes; deconstruction and reconstruction, destruction and creation, the impermanence of the object, the cyclical nature of natural organic materials and their temporary transformation to man-made products. What we see now is only a select moment in the evolution of the material. Change is both constant and inevitable…" - David Balfe, October 2003
Balfe graduated from NCAD with a BA in Fine Art in 2000 and completed Higher Diploma in Community Arts Education in 2003.
He had been actively involved in Draíocht’s outreach programme, teaching one of Draiocht’s evening course’s ‘Drawing from life’.
