Anna Boyle’s work explores the news media’s treatment of harrowing events and tragedies, and in particular, the recent gangland crime wave in West Dublin. Anna explores the notion of “memorial” which are, in her own words, 'inspired by public emotionalism within a potent climate of real-life tragedy. I use low-fi materials with a handmade elementary quality of cheap advertising, low cultural traditions and childrens craft. The ‘low tech’ quality is combined with poised technical drawing, and painting’.
Her works ring of both the home and the classroom, while dealing with events as represented in the media - a seemingly distant and removed world - but in reality one embedded in the community and family. She will present drawing and sculpture which focuses on this theme, a very relevant one for Draíocht’s location. Horror tabloid text, retail commercial statements and elements of protests are juxtaposed with imagery and information in poignant twists to reveal distant worlds and communities.
Anna Boyle lives in Castleknock and graduated with an MA in Fine Art in 2003 from the University of Ulster at Belfast and a BA in Art Education in 2001 from the National College of Art and Design.
