“What I really look for in my work is how the use of raw, natural materials can resonate, respond and retort to human interactions on the contemporary world.”
Jason’s ‘Any Observer’ work was predominantly sculptural and stood testament to significant social political commentary within the ephemeral constructs created. His pieces worked with raw natural materials such as wood, sand, water and earth in ways that speak to our experiences as humans. The work emerged during the Irish economic recession that began in 2008. His practice at the time was reactive to issues of political and financial instability in Ireland, Europe and the world at large and the ensuing social difficulties it created. For ‘Any Observer’ Jason created a series of installations unique to the gallery's architecture. Designed to evolve during the exhibition, works such as ‘Comes Tumbling Down’ gradually disintegrated as the exhibition went on. The temporary nature of the work meant that every time it was viewed, the sculpture changed, subtlety or absolutely. Jason Deans graduated from University of Ulster in 2009 with an MFA and achieved his BA in Fine Art from DIT in 2007.
Jason was Artist in Residence in Draíocht from January-June 2016, facilitating a much needed space for the delivery of 3 tonnes of earth needed to help create part of this exhibition.
This exhibition was opened by Brian Fay, artist and lecturer at Dublin School of Creative Arts on 8th June 2016.
