Drawing with Light was an exhibition investigating the nature and capacity of light as a potential medium for aesthetic expression.
McGowan began this body of work through a fascination with ‘infinity’, natural phenomena and laws of physics. Advances in technology mean that we can harness many of the inherent qualities of light, which can be manipulated, transformed, translated and transported in many ways. McGowan uses her research to make drawings with light, projected onto various plastic and glass surfaces. Some are endless and changing; others are static but appear to change as you move around them. The exhibition is intended to create an experience that will focus the viewers’ unconscious on how light resonates through our daily lives.
Julie McGowan graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the University of Ulster in 1998 and with an MA in Fine Art in 2000. She has exhibited in many group exhibitions including, EV+A 2001; Daylighting the Streets, Cork 2002; Glimpse, Queen Street Studios, 1999; Quick Flux, Catalyst Arts, Belfast 1999.
