This exhibition samples a small selection of work from this extraordinary collection of work made by artists from outside the mainstream of society. Displacement after war, mental illness, poverty and imprisonment are some of the reasons these artists remain outsiders to the rest of the world, creating their work in private and sometimes institutionalised environments while rarely being aware of art historical movements, theories or contemporary practice. Because of collectors like Victor Musgrave and Monika Kinley many of these artist are now well known and their work is collected all over the world.
The Musgrave-Kinley Outsider Art Collection is on loan to the Irish Museum of Modern Art and consists of over 600 works, this selection is being brought to Draíocht courtesy of the National Programme at IMMA.
