A unique exhibition bringing together sculptors and composers who have made artworks which function as beautiful objects as well as prototype musical instruments.
Draíocht is proud to present Soundshapes, the third in a series of creative exhibitions co-curated by Seán McCrum and Hilary Morley. The two previous exhibitions were entitled Chairs (1999) and Containers (2000).
Soundshapes is an exhibition of sculptures which make sound. It combines music composers (sound composers) with object makers (object composers) who work together to make artworks which function both as beautiful objects and prototype musical instruments. Sound and object composers come from Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Slovakia and the U.S.
Creating sound instruments never played before and learning as they go, the object makers make beautiful objects, sculpture and craft on which a player will play the composers’ compositions, or enjoy the sensation of an object which has influenced the composition.
The public complete the creative equation and everyone who comes into the exhibition can play an ‘instrument’ of their choosing, or there may be objects which react to the sound they make.
