Ross Cochrane takes a highly innovative approach to thrown ceramic sculpture, combining earthy colour and textures with a very contemporary abstract format. Drawing on the cultural heritage of his own family based in the small rural town of Cootehill, Co Cavan, and using old tools and found objects as points of reference Cochrane makes small and beautiful objects from ceramic.
Appearing like fossilised remains, the final works are deceptive in there uncanny likeness to the artefacts that inspired their creation. They are not mere copies however, and demonstrate a delicate intervention from the artist, an unmistakable artistic touch which distinguishes them from much object and ceramic sculpture which can be seen today.
Ross Cochrane is a young graduate from Sligo Institute of Technology.
