The painter Tim Allen is widely regarded as a major voice amidst the landscape of contemporary painting. Emerging from art school in the 70s, his profile has grown steadily and his contribution to the language of painting is consistently exciting, authoritative and constantly on the move.
This was a ground-breaking show for Draíocht as it was the first time we had shown this kind of work on such a large scale. It was also the first time that Tim Allen had produced a digital print of this size. Rather than simply show canvases, Tim wanted to experiment with the space and had proposed to use digital imagery derived from his paintings to make a wrap-round site-specific printed environment in the main gallery space. High pitched optical colours shimmered and fluttered across the surface, flirting with an environment that neatly evades descriptive meaning and figurative references. Any definitive conclusion or ‘reading’ is ultimately left open and precisely ambiguous.
Tim Allen is an abstract painter from the North East of England. He studied Fine Art at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and Goldsmiths College, London. He spent the autumn of 2004 in Dublin on the Artists Work Programme at IMMA.
