Open Call for Graduate Artists 2023
Deadline: 22 October 2023
The Artists Studio
June, July, August 2023
Draíocht welcomes Fingal artists Joanne Reid and Catherine Ward to The Artists Studio, further to its recent Open Call. The Artists Studio is integral to Draíocht’s infrastructure and the Residency is integral to our programme. The purpose of the residency is primarily to provide time and space for an artist to develop their practice in a comfortable, practical and supportive environment. The Studio is rent free, with an additional payment of €500 per month to the artists.
Joanne Reid will take up Residency from 01 June to 28 July. Reid is a Fingal artist originally from Balbriggan, Co Dublin, working in the medium of sculpture. Reid’s work often begins as a response to chance encounters with the materials, objects and spaces that form our built environments. In her practice, she is particularly drawn to the use of building materials, such as steel, plywood, concrete, timber, and plaster. There are also references to art history, in particular the Still Life genre, in her work. Her most recent work explores a merging of forms from the natural and the built environment.
During the residency at Draíocht, Reid will be developing new work for presentation in Studio 1 at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios in 2023.
Catherine Ward will take up Residency from 01-31 August. Ward is a multidisciplinary artist from Malahide, Co Dublin, whose practice is concerned with ideas around industry, technology and landscape. Her graduate work 'Unseen Sights' is an installation and series of paintings inspired by the old quarry landscapes of County Dublin. Using a camera drone, she captured images of the land from above revealing the human interventions which form an essential part of the environment of a city.
During the residency at Draíocht, Ward wishes to engage in research around post-industrial sites in the North County Dublin region. She will begin working on a new series of large-scale paintings for a three-person exhibition opening at the Ardgillan Castle Gallery in September. She will also focus on developing her research into a small zine publication.
