Rehearsal Space Ahead of Australia Tour
Polar Bear & Penguin was originally developed by Paul Curley & Draíocht with the support of The Arts Council YPCE Project Award & Meitheal CPS – A Branar Initiative. It embarked on an Irish tour across the country during October-December 2023 with the support of an Arts Council Touring Award and now heads to Sydney Australia for international performances, kindly supported by Culture Ireland.
Don't miss this tale of an unlikely encounter between a Polar Bear and a Penguin. This is the story of polar opposite characters meeting for the first time, getting to know one another and learning how to survive in a world that is melting beneath their feet...paws...flippers.
Paul Curley (THE DIG and Bake!) and John Currivan (The Bockety World of Henry & Bucket), bring this quirky and relevant play for young audiences to life. Award-winning director Ian Cameron (White) joins the team along with designers Ger Clancy and Sarah Jane Shiels and composer Denis Clohessy. Polar Bear & Penguin is a tale of our time, infused with humour, friendship and fish.
"As Draíocht's Theatre Artist in Residence 2021-2023, I was been able to develop my practice, create new and engaging theatre for young audiences in Dublin 15 and beyond, and build a base to collaborate with a wide range of inter-disciplinary artists on new work. Draíocht is at the forefront of the support network for independent artists making new work in Ireland today. Huge thanks for all the support over the years with Polar Bear & Penguin. Sydney Opera House will be our first international presentation of the work, which began in the rehearsal room right here in Draíocht in 2021." - Paul Curley
Draíocht is recognised as a creative hub and laboratory space and invests significantly in the development of artist's practice by the provision of benefit in kind support such as space, technical support, admin/marketing support and specialist expertise. We offer a wide range of opportunities to artists i.e. commissions, residencies, artist studios/rehearsal space, co-productions, co-commissions, seed funding, mentoring.
Our Artist Support Series, launched during Covid-19, has helped 79 artists in 2020, 50 artists in 2021, 74 artists in 2022 and 53 artists in 2023, with the provision of free rehearsal and creative space. Space to rehearse, write, create, film, dance, think & plan ... whatever is needed!
With thanks to our funders Fingal County Council & The Arts Council.
