Sian is working on Knapsack, a survivalist romp for ages 8+ which asks the audience ‘What would you pack in your bag if the world ended, and you had to run away?’ Unclear as to whether the central character is seeking shelter from rising seas, escaping a zombie apocalypse, a vengeful dragon, a war, or an evil step-parent, Knapsack instead focuses on whether a torch or a teddy is a better choice, whether sentimentality or brutality saves you in a crisis, and what tools children need when they’re far from home.
Draíocht is delighted to continue our partnership with CCI, supporting an artist to travel to Paris to participate in the 2019/2020 Residency Programme, tapping into the resources of the CCI and the city of Paris, as well as having the opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage. The recipients of Draíocht supported residencies are artists working in any discipline with a clear focus on children and/or young people.
"The Draíocht residency was a game-changer for me, and a career highlight of the last five years. Practically, it gave me a month to work on new, exciting, experimental projects that probably wouldn't have been nurtured without targeted, institutional support. My residency was also the very first time I'd been to Paris and, having been back since, I can say with certainty that there is no nicer way for an artist to experience the city than staying in the beautiful Latin Quarter with such an incredible mix of creatives to chat, eat, exchange and explore with. My stay in the Centre Culturel Irlandais led to friendships and gorgeous collaborations which extended far beyond my month long stay. The Draíocht residency, which is specifically for artists making work for young people (an often overlooked field, which prestigious international residencies are less likely to cater for), really helped me raise my game as I embarked on a new post-pandemic chapter of my writing career." - Sian Ní Mhuirí
