New Work in Development
10-14 January 2022
Our previous Artist-in-Residence, Liam Halligan, has a new work in development.
It is a new play by a first-time writer, Leo Lynch, which explores 'the culture of silence' that existed in many secondary schools in Ireland run by religious orders during the 1980s. The play will be set in a Principle's office in 1982. It will focus on three hard working teachers who attempt to deal with a serious allegation made against one of their colleagues. Over the course of one day the play will look at how these opposing characters deal with what is happening under their noses. Are questions asked? Are they fully answered? What are the consequences?
Liam will work with the writer and three actors - Lorna Quinn, Ronan Leahy and Barry John Kinsella.
The process will include meeting with retired school teachers who were working at this time. Their input will be crucial in creating the authentic atmosphere and pressures of the time. Leo does not wish to point fingers or to apportion blame but merely to understand how this 'culture' operated and how it was sustained for such a long time.
