Deirdre Dwyer adapts and directs theatre for young audiences and also designs sets and costumes for theatre, opera, dance and film. She is from Waterford, where Waterford Youth Arts and Spraoi first introduced her to theatre and design, she then went on to train in UCC (BA in English and Drama and Theatre Studies), at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (MA in Theatre Design, Cardiff) and by apprenticing as Designer on the Rough Magic SEEDS3 programme. She is a member of BrokenCrow theatre company for whom she has created two shows for children, Miss Happiness and Miss Flower, from the book by Rumer Godden, which played as part of Cork Midsummer Festival in City Libraries and The Secret Garden from the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which premiered in the Everyman and had a national tour October 2017.
She teaches design, and related theories, to students in University College Cork and Mary Immaculate College Limerick.
Draíocht is delighted to continue our partnership with CCI, supporting an artist to travel to Paris to participate in the 2019/2020 Residency Programme, tapping into the resources of the CCI and the city of Paris, as well as having the opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage. The recipients of Draíocht supported residencies are artists working in any discipline with a clear focus on children and/or young people.
"Spending a month in Paris at the Irish Cultural Centre was a long held dream for me and the reality exceeded my expectations. I spent my time walking the city, reading, writing, sketching, meeting the other resident artists and attending exhibition openings, readings and concerts. Paris wove itself into the script of the audio drama I was working on and 'Seeking Cinderella' was released a year later. Having the space and time, out of my ordinary life, to absorb a new city is indelibly threaded through this story. The people I observed, the places I visited and the architecture I was surrounded by have all crept into the audio drama and made it a more vibrant and engaging piece. I am really grateful to Draíocht and the CCI for the opportunity and experience and would urge any other artists making work for children to apply." - Deirdre Dwyer
