Research and Development
D15 Primary Schools
There was great excitement in two local primary schools this week as Draíocht’s Dance Artist in Residence for 2024, Matt Szczerek, dropped in to perform some snippets from his brand new show ‘Monsters’, currently in development, as part of his residency. This is a really important part of the research phase of any new show for children, and Draíocht’s Youth Arts Department were delighted to organise it.
Having rehearsed over the previous days and weeks with fellow dancer and circus artist Alessio Motta here in Draíocht, it was time to get out of the Studio, and into the classrooms! Matt and Alessio performed 3 times, for 20 minutes, to original music composed by Jack Foster, for 3 separate class groups in both schools.

Scoil Choilm Community National School - Pupils from Junior, Senior and First classes
Matt loves scary movies and this new ‘Monsters’ show has been inspired by that. Pupils got to ask Matt and Alessio questions afterwards, and talk about their own ideas of what monsters look like and how they might behave. All of this feedback will help inspire Matt to develop the show further!
Stay tuned for more development news as Matt and Alessio visit more schools.
"My work is driven by emotion and a need to tell stories through the body. It is important that it resonates with young and mature audience, bridging generational gaps and relates to what we all go through as a humanity. I believe the impact of dance can be transformative for many, both performer and audience. My goal in making dance is to create collaborative space and shared experiences that will invite conversation, debate and that will also make you bop!" - Matt Szczerek
Matt Szczerek's Dance Residency 2024 in Draíocht is supported by The Arts Council, with additional funding provided by Fingal County Council & Draíocht.
