October 2001 - March 2002
Who could have imagined that from hundreds and thousands of little pieces of tile and glass, a three dimensional Mosaic Masterpiece would be born!
From October 2001-March 2002, over 350 children from 12 schools, 14 teachers and 5 artists have been furiously painting and polishing, magnificently matching and mosaic-ing, in preparation for a massive 20 foot high sculpture which was mounted on permanent display in Draíocht in March 2002.
David Balfe, a local artist whose recent work The Viper Car is currently on exhibition in Draiocht (a burnt out Ford Fiesta which, with the help of a group of young lads from Corduff, was transformed into a mosaic work of art) is co-ordinating the project, together with Emer McGowan, Outreach/Education Officer at Draíocht.
The preparation programme includes ongoing workshops for pupils and complementary workshops for their teachers. The children’s workshops explore elements of the Primary School Visual Arts Curriculum e.g. colour and tone, pattern and rhythm, line and shape. The workshops have been specifically designed for 5th Class pupils to encourage them to discover, develop and express their creativity.
As well as developing their own individual work, the children have been working in small groups, sharing their experiences, learning and ideas with classmates.
The final sculpture was mounted in Draíocht during the week of 18th March and officially opened on Friday 22nd March at 6pm.
The 12 schools involved in the project were:
Ladyswell National School, Mulhuddart National School, Sacred Heart of Jesus National School, Scoil Bride Girls National School, Scoil Bride Boys National School, Scoil Olibheir, Scoil Thomais, St Brigids Mixed National School, St Francis Xavier's Senior National School, St Mochtas National School, St Patricks Senior National School and St Philip the Apostle Senior National School.
